The Russians didn't have the technology. And it looks like the monkey thing is questionable too. It's true that the monkeys were the first in space, but they didn't go to the moon because they weren't able to collect samples or be trusted not to climb on the equipment. The interviewer should have done his homework and called the Russian space man on this point instead of letting him get away with it.
